Step One: Divide class into three groups and give each group one poem to discuss.
Step Two: Divide groups into three sub groups.
Sub Group 1: Create a summary of important events and ideas of the poem. It can simply be a bulleted list.
Sub Group 2: Create a list of themes poem discusses. Then develop and write an explanation of what the poem reveals about the culture it derives from.
Sub Group 3: Select an actor or actress to play the lead role. Explain why this person would fit the role. Discuss how you would film it. Explain what tone the film would take. How should the audience feel when they leave the theater.
We have taught this senior English class for over seven years. Every year the class is different. Many of the lessons are the same, but it's the students who add the diversity and the original feel to the class. You get back what you put into the class.
